Retirement Struggles in American Society

The cost of living is skyrocketing every passing minute.  Countless seniors are faced with low-funded retirement pensions. Stressors are compelling many to retire later in life, and to seek-out employment opportunities. Edward Ted Siedle writer for, The Greatest Retirement Crisis In American History, shares the following; “We are on the precipice of the greatest retirement crisis in the history of the world. In the decades to come, we will witness millions of elderly Americans, the Baby Boomers and others, slipping into poverty.” Siedle also noted that 401(K) retirement plans average at $25,000- an exceedingly low income for anyone striving to making a livelihood in todays’ society.

Alex Johnson reporter for documents statistical data in his article, Economy hitting the elderly especially hard. As noted by Johnson, the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) reports that nearly a quarter of Americans who filed bankruptcies within the last year were over 55 years old. Johnson revealed in his article bankruptcy filings among 75 to 84 seniors had an impacting increase of 433 percent from 1991 to 2007.  Sadly, this shocking statistical data doesn’t seem to have much of an effect on leaders and politicians.

Siedle expresses his perspective on the subject stating:

Given the certainty that a retirement crisis is headed toward our shores, you’d think that our elected officials would be hard at work preparing a response. Of course, that’s not happening. To the contrary, conservatives are trying to pare back so-called entitlements that will mushroom in the near future and liberals have failed to acknowledge the crisis or propose any solutions. (para. 14)

Many seniors are confronting the oppression of Americas’ economic hardship. The dreams of retiring comfortably and enjoying the later stages of life, seems beyond grasp. Individuals are retiring at advanced ages and struggling to accumulate enough income for the essentials. offers a great resource, Ten Steps to Get Your Retirement Back on Track.
