Natural Therapies for Relief of Arthritis During Climate Changes

Arthritis is inflammation of the joints commonly presenting as joint stiffness, pain, and tenderness. Arthritis can exacerbate during climate changes particularly in cold winters and hot summer days. The Arthritis Foundation references a clinical study on climate temperature and joint pain, “In 2007, researchers at Tufts University in Boston reported that every 10-degree drop in temperature corresponded with an incremental increase in arthritis pain. Increasing barometric pressure was also a pain trigger in the Tufts study.” Climate changes can result in arthritis flares presenting sudden pain and inflammation. Managing arthritis extends beyond pharmacological agents. Pain medications and anti-inflammatory agents are often prescribed to manage symptoms, yet many carry potential side effects. With the guidance of healthcare professionals clients can also benefit from natural therapies.

 The Arthritis Foundation documents herbs and supplements beneficial for joint health. Consult with your physician before initiating natural supplements as some products may interact or counteract effectiveness of medications.

Herbal Guide & Supplement Suggestions From the Arthritis Foundation:

1. Avocado Soybean Unsaponifiables (ASU) – blocks inflammatory chemicals and may aid in the rebuilding of connective tissue.

2. Black Currant Oil – high in gamma-linoleic acid (GLA), which is good for joint health.

3. Bromelain – enzymes found in pineapple that decrease inflammation.

4. Chondroitin Sulfate – known to decrease inflammation and improve joint mobility.

5. Glucosamine – slows cartilage breakdown and helps decrease pain.

6. Sam-e – used to improve mobility, and eases symptoms of stiffness and joint pain.

7. Tumeric – is a natural herb with anti-inflammatory, digestive, and cleansing properties. The Arthritis Foundation shares a study were Tumeric was given to people with Osteoarthritis (OA), “A 2010 clinical trial found that a turmeric supplement called Meriva (standardized to 75 percent curcumin combined with phosphatidylcholine) provided long-term improvement in pain and function in 100 patients with knee OA.”

Other therapies for arthritis flares include range-of-motion exercises, walking, swimming, massage, yoga, acupuncture, topical gels, transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS), and others.  The Mayo Clinic advises clients with arthritis to refrain from activities like running, jumping, and sports with repetitive movements like tennis.

Warm and cold compresses can also provide relief during flares. Warm compresses increases circulation, helping relieve stiffness and pain. Cold compresses decrease inflammation and ease muscle spasms. Some individuals experience greater relief of symptoms when alternating between cold and warm compresses. Consult with your practitioner to determine which therapies and supplements are most beneficial for your health needs.
