Healthy Aging Tips for Older Adults

Join us as celebrate healthy aging month! In September we promote healthy lifestyle choices for older adults that enhance wellness and wellbeing. The good news is drastic changes are not required for wholesome living. Introducing a few strategies at a time can bring about positive outcomes. Take a proactive stand this month towards your health and wellbeing!

Tips for Seniors on Healthy Aging:

1. Maintain a balanced diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Fruits and veggies carry essential vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. Whole grains are also high in fiber and contain needed carbohydrates for energy and metabolism. Keeping a nutritious diet is a great start towards healthy aging.  Consult with the physician on a nutritional plan that best suits your individual health needs.

2. Schedule exams and check-ups as advised by your practitioner. Staying current with medical exams and required procedures is important for disease control and prevention. Check-ups and diagnostics allow for early assessments, and if needed interventions.

3. Stay physically active. Studies show the benefits of exercise for emotional wellbeing, cardiovascular health, energy, and maintaining ideal weight. NIH Senior Health comments on the benefits of exercise noting, “Scientists have found that staying physically active and exercising regularly can help prevent or delay many diseases and disabilities. In some cases, exercise is an effective treatment for many chronic conditions.” Consult with your physician for a suitable exercise regimen.

4. Engage in activities that bring fulfillment. Hobbies and extracurricular activities foster social interactions, personal accomplishments, and enhance mood. Examples include joining a tennis club, art classes, dancing, swimming, chess club, golf events, volunteering, and others.

5. Reach out to the community for resources and health events. Most communities offer classes, recreational activities, and health services for seniors. Contact a local library or community center for locations and resources. Getting involved in the community is a great way to collaborate with other people in your area.
