Color Your Plate With A Variety of Fruits & Veggies!

Most of us are familiar with the importance of consuming a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. It sure is healthy and nutritious! Yet, are you familiar with properties that make fruits and veggies a must in your diet? No one fruit or vegetable contains all essential vitamins and minerals needed for healthy living. Essential vitamins and minerals are obtained through the consumption of nutritious foods. Try being adventurous, adding tasty and colorful fruits and veggies to your meals! Nature offers a variety of foods with nutritional properties waiting to be discovered.

A general rule in healthy eating is to have a colorful plate. Doing so opens a wide range of delicious food choices with vast nutritional properties. Antioxidant-rich foods help fight damaging effects of free radicals on healthy cells. Beta-carotene is a rich antioxidant that gives fruits and veggies such as carrots, squash, melons, and apricots an orange or yellow appearance. The University of Maryland Medical Center shares how consuming antioxidant-rich foods boosts the immune system, aids in fighting free radicals, and can decrease risk of heart disease and cancer. Food choices can have positive influence on health, energy levels, and mental wellbeing. Numerous studies confirm the role of nutrition on mental and physical health. “Studies that look at big groups of people suggest that those who eat 4 or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables rich in beta-carotene may reduce their risk of developing heart disease or cancer”, notes The University of Maryland Medical Center.

Harvard T.H. Chan – School of Public Health recommends diverse kinds and colors of produce for a wholesome mix of nutrients. Examples include dark green leafy veggies like spinach, and vibrant colored fruits like oranges and tomatoes. In addition to antioxidant properties, fruits and veggies contain other health benefits like fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Dietary fiber supports digestive health, cardiovascular wellbeing, and helps stabilize blood sugar. Vitamins and minerals are needed for general health and wellness. No one fruit or vegetable contains all the needed vitamins and minerals for healthy living. The idea is to color your plate with a variety of fruits and vegetables for a nutritious and tasty meal!
